ANNIKA OWES AN APOLOGY

FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker)—When Annika Sorenstam recently announced that she would retire at the end of the year, a Swedish journalist was finally vindicated.
Sorenstam’s retirement has prompted plenty of tributes, and there is no doubt that for nearly all of her career she has been a class act. However, one unfortunate episode will tarnish her legacy.

Early last year, during a long 1-on-1 interview with Thomas Tynander of Aftonbladet newspaper, Sorenstam said that she might retire in the not too distant future.

“I’m pretty tired of golf. I want to have kids, and if we decide to do that, the time is now and I probably can’t combine that with a golf career,” she said, according to one English translation of the Swedish article.
It was hardly provocative stuff, but when the Aftonbladet article appeared, Sorenstam and her management company were horrified, apparently concerned that her sponsorship deals would dry up.

Sorenstam and her agent hung Tynander out to dry, claiming he had taken her out of context, the time honored ploy of athletes everywhere when they regret something they have said.

Never mind that her agent, Mark Steinberg, cannot read Swedish, and was therefore in no position to really know whether Sorenstam had been taken out of context or not.
It did not help that three international news services all translated the Aftonbladet story into English, and all ended up with markedly different interpretations.
We all know how things can get lost in translation, but that’s ridiculous.

Tynander was so upset that Sorenstam, with whom he had enjoyed a long professional relationship, tried to malign his reputation that he left the newspaper not long afterwards.

Another Swedish journalist who listened to the tape of the interview, which was conducted in Swedish, confirmed recently that Sorenstam was quoted accurately, word for word, in the Aftonbladet story, and that the golfer was in no way taken out of context.

But that didn’t stop Sorenstam and Steinberg from trying to tarnish the reputation of an excellent journalist.

Sorenstam must have known that she was not taken out of context. It would speak volumes of her character if she offered Tynander a belated apology.
