To Scotland

av Alexander Norén

I was a little stressed when getting to the airport this morning…had a lot of time but feuling up the rental, returning it, change terminal and so on made me leave the gas station with the fuel hassle still in the car. Not a great move! Another very bad move was to wash my kind of new trainers in the washing machine on high temperature. They shrunk a little. Probably fits a 5 year old now:)

DSC00343.JPG

Meeting up with my physio at the Edinbourgh airport to try to navigate ourselves to St:Andrews Golf Course to get some work done on my equipment. Gonna get a new set of irons and new wedges. No grooves left in the wedges and the irons feels a little old. Gonna work some with Seamus who works with putters for Callaway. Trying out some different lofts and grips. Love using new stuff. It’s like christmas! I remember when I got a new wedge when I was little. Went stright to the chipping green and tried out how much spin it had. Spin was the most important thing in the world back then. It still is when trying to be cooler than your buddy on the practice green. On the course though, I would love to never spin the ball back ever again. Hate when you land it by the pin and it sucks back a few yards. It’s gonna be good next year when we don’t have as deep grooves.

I hate airports and I’m not a fan of airplanes either. It’s too much stress around it. It feels like you have to get earlier and earlier to the airport for each time you fly. The security is getting more serious and the time you spend checking in overexceeds the time in the air most of the times.

It feels a little weird leaving Monaco after such a great week. Golf, gym, sun and beautiful surrounndings! The best mix! Was looking for an open gym last night. Monaco is literally dead on sundays. It’s a law that no place can be open. There are a few exeptions. One of those was this posh gym that I sneaked into for free:) I’ve never seen a gym with a view like this before. I’ve always preferred the undergound gym with free weights lying around everywhere and the smell of sweat and chalk. This place smelled of Dior cologne and successful business people. But, with a view like this even biking was nice.

The only bad thing about Scotland is the weather but when the weather is good, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. The golf courses are at the very top! Kingsbarns is such a fun course to play. It can play so different from day to day. A hole you drove the green on, could be such a struggle to reach in regulation the day after with a different wind. Carnoustie is just a great great golf course. It has it all! St:Andrews is like no other course. Huge slopes everywhere and the ground feels holy!

All the best!

See you!

Questions and answers!

av Alexander Norén

I’m trying to answer some of your questions and I translated them to English so everybody can read:) Hope it’s ok!

Q. What muscle groups do you train to help you do the very one-sided golf action?

A. I train my whole body in many different exercises. Try to become as all-around as possible. To be to golf specific tends to hurt my body as there are too many golf moves per day.

Q. Do you speak a lot to your playing partners? Who is most fun to play with?

A. If I like them, we speak quit a lot. If, not and if for some other reason I’m not in the mood to speak, I just speak to my caddie. I love playing with Alvaro Quiros…He is the funniest guy ever. A few years ago his English was really poor so it was even more fun back then. He should never have improved it.

Q. What shakes do you take after working out and how often do you take it?

A. I take protein shakes after every training session and sometimes when I feel the real need to take one. When the food is really bad or when I’ve been flying all day.

Q. Do you live in France? Do you have friends there to play with? Have you got a bunch of new sponsors after your win in Switzerland?

A. I live in Monaco. We are a few golfers there but it seems like we are never there at the same time. The weeks I take off from tournaments, the other guys play and so on. Had a few fun offers but nothing decided yet.

Q. Do you also have special training routines for practicing strategy, approach, mental strength och så vidare?

A. I’m better at structuring and planning my work outs than my golf training. I have a red line in my training and mental work but no daily plans for specific training hours and so on.

Q. How good is Bro-Hof compared to the European Tour courses you play?

A. Bro Hof is at the very top in the world. We never play a course that good on the European Tour.

Q. What do you think when you are over the ball?

A. I think of what kind of shot I want to play. The trajectory, the shape and so on. And to waht target. A little bit of how my body should move to make that happen.

Q. As a 16 handicap, should I use blade clubs to make the next level? And when is it good to change to blades?

A. I think you should always use the most forgiving clubs possible. As a pro, I don’t use blades. I think they are to tough. I use a little more cavity-back clubs to make the game a touch easier. It’s hard enough as it is.

Q. Have you been to the nightclub Jimmy’z in Monaco yet? =)

A. Yeah, was there once but very quick…rather go to outdoor places in Monaco. Being a Swede, we love the heat, speacially at night.

Q. I was looking at your stats that your putting will be the answer to reach the top players(i guess a more accurate driver if you going to win majors) With your greens regulation is world class is extremly impressive and with a hot putter, that will give rest of the players a scary feeling down the strech. If this they case what is your plan for the future on this ?

A. I plan a lot of putting work ahead with tough exercises to put a lot of pressure on the putting to make it stronger.

Q. The exercise where you hit wedges with open, square and shut club face, what’s the purpose with that?

A. I like to have control of the blad at all times. To hit with different lofts make me understand how the ball will move in the air and how to make it move. The shut face lowers the trajectory for example, but to still hit it high with a shut face you need to do certain things that can improve your swing. I want to fins ways to improve my swing. Sometimes, I need to hit with shut face to get rid of some fault, the next time with open face.

Q. Alex, I was wondering why you were hitting draws and fades with wedges? Maybe something that I should try out?

A. I think when you move up to the pro level you need to have a lot of different shots. The greens are fast and slopy and sometimes you need to hit a little fade from 70 yards to make the ball stay on the green and not spin down the slope for example. It’s also good to practice draw and fade on very small chips for control of the face and your swing.

Q. Hi, I’m just wondering what kind of program you follow at the gym? which specific parts do you believe that me as a young female golfer should focus on at the gym?

A. I do a very all-around work out. Different reps, exercises and weight all the time. I believe you should work a lot on controlling your body in stomach and back exerices, cables, push- and pull exercises for the whole body and so on. The more control and strength you have over you body the more control you will have over the club.

Q. It seems like you hit a lot of balls from range mats, doesn’t that make it tough for you to get the right feel for the shots?

A. I like hitting of mats, I have always done. We didn’t have grass turf on the range. But, I know it’s better to hit off the grass. I’m lazy, you don’t have to clean your club after each shot from a mat:) But, it’s very rare I practice of mats. Never at a tournament.

Q. Have a problem with ”early extension” where my body raises at impact and I can’t hold the correct angle of my spine. Do you have a good gym exercise that will help me improve this?

A. I have always had the same problem. The thing I used a lot was ”The Leaderboard”. There is an exercise on the CD they give you that explains it where your right foot is back and behind the left and you have to keep it there during the whole swing. Hard to explain. I think it’s worth getting ”The Leaderboard” just for that exercise. Also, push and pull exercises in the gym are really good. Cables are great I think.

Keep the questions coming!

See you and good luck out there!

Dunhill Links is coming up!

av Alexander Norén

Had a look around Monaco yesterday and saw a lot of cool stuff. The yacht show makes the harbour look even more busy! It was such a lzy day for me…got stuck into doing nothing all day and it feels great to be out on the course again and get some work done. Sometimes it feels great to take a day off and not even work out.

CIMG1070.JPG CIMG1094.JPG CIMG1085.JPG CIMG1111.JPG CIMG1078.JPG CIMG1118.JPG CIMG1158.JPG CIMG1170.JPG

Seeing all these things makes me realize how crazy this place is. It’s so unreal and way too much in every aspect. Although, it’s great for relaxing and to train so I love it! But, it’s gonna feel great to get to Scotland where the life is a little bit more normal and down to earth.

Dunhill Links Championship is coming up next week and it’s a great tournament! Each pro play with an amatuer partner all four days and we play one round at Kingsbarns, one at Carnoustie and two at St:Andrews. Could be worse:) Same as previous years, a few of us rent a house outside St:Andrews and we have a great week. This time, our manager ordered some free weights to the house so we can work out for real…Pierre ”the vein man” is coming so we will train hard I hope.

Have fun and see you later!!!

Forum

av Alexander Norén

I drive about 2,5 hours in a car every day back and fourth to the golf course. First, I hated it. Now, I actually enjoy it. It gives me a lot of time to think about stuff. There are a few things that really came to my mind.

The reason why I started writing this blog is that I love golf and wanted to comminicate with people who share the same passion. My hope is that the comment box under each blog will serve as a forum for people who wants to improve their game. We all learn from each other. If you think what I do is good, weird or just bad, comment and myself and others will reflect on it. If you want to add something, I would be really happy to read it. I love improving my game and your tips will help me and others to acheive their goals. Improving in anything is the best feeling ever…

This year at the Malaysian Open, I shot 63 in the first round. A reporter came up to me after the round and told me that I improved my first round score by 18 shots from the last time I played the tournament in 2007. That was one of the best moments in my life. Right there with the reporter. It made me realise that the work I had put in had improved my game. Nothing tastes sweeter!

Got a request on a short game video and I’m trying to put it together. I want to be able to post the videos straight on the blog but it seems a little to complicated for me at the monent. Will figure it out soon. If you guys have any videos of your swings, please post them and we all can have a look and give some pointers if it’s needed and you guys will improve. There might be some golf coaches who reads the blog who can help out. Also, I really like looking at swings.

Played worse ball again today. It’s all I play down here in Monaco/France. It feels like it’s the best exercise out of so many perspectives. Just to explain the rules: You hit two shots from the first tee. You pick the worst ball and hit two shots from there. Pick the worst one again and you do that until both balls are in the hole. And then do that for 17 more holes. Why is this so good? Here are my thoughts:

1. You have to concentrate more than usually. If you start with a good or a bad shot, it’s tough to clear your mind and focus on the second shot. Specially on the greens. Let’s say you make the first 10-footer, you have to make the second, otherwise it doesn’t count. Worst case scenario is if you make the first and really try to make the second and run that 5 feet past, now you have to make two 5-footers in a row coming back. Good mentally! In the beginning I could not stand playing this on-course exercise for more than 9 holes. Now, I can do 18.

2. It makes you understand your limitations. If you have 250 yards over water and you know you can carry 255 on a good day maybe it’s not certain that both balls will carry the water. Same thing if you have a really tough flop shot over a bunker. If you hit a perfect high flop shot it will be inside 5 feet. Since, it’s a risky shot, a misshit could end up pretty much anywhere. Maybe you hit one high flop to 5 feet, the next in the bunker. If you take the safer route and play a medium high shot, it will end up around 10-12 feet away. You might not make two 12 footers in a row but it’s better than playing from the bunker.

3. It makes you want to hit more greens in regulation and therefore play a little bit more strategic off the tee and to the green. I rather have to balls on the green 20 feet from the pin than one in the hole and one in the water hazard.

4. It makes you really remember your birdies. To make a birdie in this game will put a smile on your face.

5. I don’t think mental coaches can teach you what you learn in this game.

6. To play only one ball after playing this will seem easy. Golf is never easy though is it, that’s why we love it:)

My college coach Mike Holder introduced our golf team to this game in the middle of a qualifying tournament (the team plays for the first five spots who gets to play in the college tournament) so we really had to focus and not let the tough exercise get in our heads and end up shooting in the 90’s and be out of the qualifying.

What do you guys play usually?

See you!!!

Video!

Here is the video we filmed yesterday at Terre Blanche GC. Sorry for not making the link highlighted so it automatically uploads. Working on my technical skills…It’s my first video so from now on the videos will be better in quality and substance. I can almost promise:)

Put together a second video today of some swings from this year. I post it tomorrow. It’s fun to see all the places we practice at during the year. All the different ranges and indoor huts. Would be fun to see how many hours we golfers spend on the golf course over the course of a year!

Went to Nice to see what that city is like and I wasn’t impressed. Missed Monaco and the gym. Get boored of just walking around in a city. Tomorrow it’s Terre Blanche again and some more golf. Saw a movie last night called ”The Greatest Game Ever Played”. Decent movie about how Francis Ouimet became such a good golfer.

It’s pretty hectic in Monaco now. The yearly ”Yacht Show” is on and there are a lot of boats along the coast. I don’t know if you can get on the boats. I heard you have to show serious interest in buying a yacht to be allowed on them. The combined value of all the boats on display at the show is 2 billion Euros. Sick and a little discusting.

On the way back we saw an airplane show! I think there were 5 planes doing a series of moves in total syncronization with each other. Amazing to watch them in action, specially when it was on the coast of Monaco with all the boats underneath them. Here are some pics of the show…

See you later!

Wall of fame!

av Alexander Norén

After a slow morning with some sleeping in I met up with my friend Henric Davidsson. He lives up in the little village Roquebrun just outside Monaco. He likes playing golf so we went out to Terre Blanche GC to play a round. Got some pics before we went from where he lives and of the view the people living there are spoiled with. Unreal!

CIMG1000.JPGCIMG1004.JPGCIMG1005.JPG

Above is the village of Roquebrun pictured from the tiny road winding up to the village.

The way to Terre Blanche GC is pretty nice so the drive doesn’t feel as long as it is…

CIMG0977.JPGCIMG0988.JPG CIMG0981.JPG

They love the road tolls in France…feels like you have to stop all the time to throws some money in. But, when we were heading out to this awesome course, we didn’t care if it cost us a few Euro…it’s worth it!

Henric did an awesome job as a photographer/filmer today. I just made a video with some swings and nice scenery but I’m not able to post it on the blog yet. Tomorrow I’ll get it up!

Went back to the athlete’s gym in the football stadium to try to get the blood pressure test done so I could finally work out in there. Met the guy in charge and a test wasn’t necessary but some identification and proof of that I was actually participating in a sport was needed. Now I can officially train there…feels nice! Took some pics of the hallway of the gym where you can see a lot of great athletes who have worked out in there.

See you tomorrow!

”Bus of the year 2004”

av Alexander Norén

Followed my plan today for the first time ever…Went up early to not get stuck in traffic and to practice some putting with the dew on the greens. Went well. I think I focus better on the golf course in the morning and late afternoon. I used to love the team training we had at my home course, Haninge GK, when I was little. It was always in the evening so the parents could drive us. We picked balls on the range on the way down to the bottom where we could hit of the grass. When we were done hitting, we picked up all the balls from the range and we got rewarded with cinnamon rolls and soft drinks. Good times!  It has something to do with the light in the morning and the evening. In the middle of the day, it’s too bright and there are also a lot of people practicing so it’s hard to do the drills you want to do. Here is a few pics from this morning…

CIMG0873.JPGCIMG0874.JPGCIMG0878.JPGCIMG0895.JPGCIMG0901.JPGCIMG0910.JPG

After an awesome day on the course with no clouds and 30 degrees I wanted to hit the beach but it ended up being to late to get a tan…haven’t tanned my body since I was 12 i think. Pretty white.

Decided for the gym instead where I can get something accomplished. Went all the way there with the bus to only get rejected at the door since I haven’t given the gym crew a blood pressure test…the guy who does the testing wasn’t there. I’ll try again tomorrow. Took the bus back furious because I really wanted to work out. Came to think about my old gym just above my apartment so took the bus there. Still mad. Saw that the bus I was in was ”Bus of the year 2004”. That made the whole trip meaningful and I was happy again!:)

CIMG0918.JPG

Like writing the blog when people think it’s fun to read! Thanks for the comments! Makes me happy! Love golf and to write about it is fun as well!

Turtle in Entourage for president!

av Alexander Norén

Started off the best way possible…

CIMG0796.JPG

When I was fully loaded with food and energy from Entourage I was ready for a gym session! Went to a gym where all the athletes that live in Monaco train. It’s located  in the football stadium and it was the best gym I’ve seen here. It doesn’t have much competitions since the gyms here are either full of stupid machines and treadmills or they are the size of my apartment which is not very big so all the equipment is usually taken. But it was fun there with all the athletes working out. Got a deja vu of college. Let’s just say that we golfers weren’t the strongest athletes in the college work out room…Met some Swedish skiers in there, Markus Larsson and Jens Byggmark.

Straight home for some lunch and more Entourage…it feels like a meal without Entourage is not a real meal…sad maybe but I like the show!

This is the best putting mat ever! You don’t have to mow it and it’s fast!

CIMG0868.JPG

Did some walking around in Monaco as well…looked for good things to photograph and tried not to get carried away taking pictures of cars and boats. The thing is that I’m not a good photographer and my camera is not up to pro standard but I did my best…

CIMG0826.JPGCIMG0829.JPGCIMG0820.JPGCIMG0860.JPGCIMG0848.JPGCIMG0845.JPGCIMG0852.JPGCIMG0838.JPGCIMG0805.JPGCIMG0818.JPGCIMG0855.JPG

Need to go to bed early…gonna try to get out to the course when it’s still dew on the greens to learn how much the putts break…

Happy times!

Later!
